The Heart of the Lion

This Hubble image taken by University of Virginia astronomer Craig Sarazin of the nearby elliptical galaxy Messier 105 (also called NGC 3379) is currently the Hubble Space Telescope Picture of the Week (January 7 - 11).   Although the image was taken primarily to study the relationship between stellar mass black holes and globular star clusters, it has also been used to study the 200 million solar mass supermassive black hole at the galaxy center and star formation in and near this galaxy.  More information and images are available at:
